Wow. It has sadly been a while since I’ve posted here. Being abroad got really packed toward the end. I can say, however, that this trip has made me into a different person and I look forward to returning to Wofford with new goals and a different mindset.

Ecuador is a country which constantly welcomes. Whether it be vendors with an invitation to try their products without buying anything, or individuals insisting on a visit to their house, or most importantly for me, community organizations inviting you to be involved.

There are so many groups in Ecuador working to improve their locality and they are just so willing to invite outsiders in, no matter how short the amount of time. I experienced this numerous times in libraries throughout the country as well as indigenous organization revitalizing their culture. Most importantly, these people illuminated the importance to me of working in one’s own community to make change.

I think that here in the US, we are typically exposed to so many overwhelming issues far away, it can be easy to lose track of all the things that need to change near us. More than that, I think it is so easy to get caught up in the motions of our daily busy lives and never become involved in the community which surrounds us. I want to experience some of that wonderful community in Spartanburg.

I love my involvements at Wofford, but I think I have been so invested in staying on campus, I have missed out on living in Spartanburg. My goal when I return is to volunteer in the community consistently for my last year and a half. I hope to use my Spanish with the organizations I have heard of in Spartanburg. More than anything, I want to balance my life living in the campus bubble, but also experiencing everything that the world outside has to teach.
Having left Ecuador and done a program focused on excursions and experiential learning, I am fully convinced that practice is the best teacher, and I look forward to giving myself more chances to experience outside of the classroom or campus.
