It is ABOUT Time!

Ok, so this isn't related to Summer School of Wofford at all but I am REALLY happy about this news and I feel as if I should share it with the world.

You couldn’t make this stuff up:
Sens. John Kerry, Bob Corker, and Sheldon Whitehouse today announced the passage of their legislation to remove former South African President Nelson Mandela from the terror watch list. The bill grants the Secretary of State, in consultation with the Departments of Justice and Homeland Security, the authority to waive U.S. travel restrictions on President Mandela and other members of the African National Congress (ANC.)

Mandela and his fellow ANC members remain on the list for activities they conducted against South Africa’s apartheid regime decades ago. The senators hope the passage of this legislation will end this embarrassing impediment to improving U.S.-South Africa relations.

“In recognition of his ninetieth birthday this summer, Nelson Mandela is again honored as one of the world’s strongest voices for human dignity and courage in the face of oppression. Today the United States moved closer at last to removing the great shame of dishonoring this great leader by including him on our government’s terror watch list,” said Kerry.

That’s right - Condi will now be allowed to consider deeming Mandela unlikely to blow up US citizens…

This is from my favorite (non-Wofford) blog GlobalDashboard.org. It is amazing that it has taken this long (in my opinion). Nonetheless, I am SOOOOO happy about this! Maybe (Baker) now Wofford could get him to come and speak (Baker)!

Otherwise, Summer School is going well, we have finals next week (mine is on Tuesday).

Summer Orientation

Hey everyone! Today was summer orientation. Sadly, I did not go as I'm an RA and we are persecuted by the O-Staffers and are not allowed to participate in their summer orientation activities (j/k). Nonetheless, I would love to hear how your Summer Orientation went! Also, if you didn't go, that's fine, neither did I. I think that ours was the day after I graduated (which was also my 18th birthday!). Hope to hear from you!

P.S. If I gave you your tour or part of your tour I would LOVE to hear what you thought of it!

Meet an RPM

N566299504_482574_5016 Ok, so I have this friend, and her name is Marissa. She rocks! She is what we call, retarded--I mean an RPM (Resident Peer Mentor). Basically what this means is that she eats lunch with a very special group of Freshmen (Hopefully you) and helps you adjust to College Life by answering your questions and helping you with your problems. Oh, and I'll probably crash some of them myself. And here's Marissa to introduce herself:

Umm.....First of all, fall is the best time of year because of football, you meet a TON of people and well, FOOTBALL! Every Saturday you can find me in the student section (right beside Tomas). Though it is exciting to start a new school year, it can also be daunting. But it is going to be GREAT! Just be yourself, be excited and be willing to introduce yourself to other people. Orientation can be awkward and weird but everyone is going through it together, its not just you feeling like that! :D

Can't wait to meet you all!

Meet an R.A. Part 7

Well, I have another R.A. friend to tell you about. His name is Nathan and he will be on 3rd floor Greene with my R.A. from this past year Hayes. He rocks!

1. Ok lets see, overall advice... Basically just take this year as it comes and enjoy the experience. Don't stress too much about wanting to fit in or worrying what organization you should join. All that stuff comes with time. At the start of the year I would suggest meeting as many people as you can and just being yourself, trust me the awkward freshman feeling goes away in no time. By the way, if you are ever bored in the afternoons at around 3:33 we usually have an ultimate Frisbee game going.

2. Nathan's college packing list:
-towels
-pillow
-bed sheets (I would suggest a memory foam mattress top)
-usual school supplies (I would also suggest a printer, stapler, and hole punch)
-rug or carpet for the floor
-vacuum cleaner
-laundry detergent
-wide variety of clothes (for the people not from South Carolina I'm just warning you we have spastic weather some times)
-microwave
-refrigerator (by the way communicate with your future roomie and decide who wants to buy what when it comes to the big stuff. that way it keeps you from having double of everything as well)
-power strip
-something you can carry your soap, shampoo, etc.. to the shower in (we are a hall bathroom so you don't have to bring toilet paper)
-cheap flip-flops for shower shoes
-alarm clock
-small trash can
-sunscreen
-band-aids
-ear plugs (if you are a light sleeper)
-lamp (desk and possibly other)
-batteries
-chairs/futon (ok when it comes to futons the vibe I picked up from other freshman this year was that it is worth it to put in a little more money and buy a decent futon then to buy the cheaper target one)

3. Ok so if the set up is like this previous year then the two guys halls in Greene will be on the third floor. For those of you who don't know the Greene hall rooms are a bit more spacious than Marsh room but they don't have a walk in closet so that's a trade off. You'll have a hall bathroom with 4 showers, oh and just to warn you I wouldn't attempt putting ramen noodles or any other food down the drain in the sinks... it doesn't usually end well because the sinks stop-up. Greene also has a common room area on second floor with plenty of couches so its good place to hang out or study if your tired of your room. Laundry room has 5 washing machines and 4 driers (idk you do the math) and its on the bottom floor. All in all, Greene life is pretty awesome to live in, its where I spent this past year as a resident. If you have any questions feel free to send them my way.

4. I open a banana like a monkey.

Well, that was Nathan, feel free to comment and we'll get back to you!
