Okay, so there are four main sororities. Theta, Zeta, KD, and Tri Delt (Not in order of my preference, I assure you.) Wonderfully enough, my hall has at least three members of each sorority as well as three non-greeks.
Kappa Alpha Theta, or Theta for short. My neighbors on the left & my across the hall neighbor, along with 5 other girls on my hall are Thetas. The Thetas are fun girls. My adjective for them is classic. They're not like a super uptight bunch, none of them are unapproachable, but they have appropriate formality. And at a football game, they'll probably be in dresses.
Zeta Tau Alpha, or Zeta. Is very pink. Now, I can kind of say a little bit more about them b/c I know more of them AND because I know Zetas at other colleges. They are fun! They are outgoing and fun to be around and super active. My neighbors on the right & my diagonal neighbor to the left, plus 2 other girls on my hall are Zeta. Then, I have a friend from elementary school who is a Zeta @ USC & a friend from church who is a Zeta at College of Charleston. My thoughts of the Zetas as a whole is that they're girly girls. That being said, I know Zetas who don't fit that and I really like the Zetas. If I were going to be Greek. Zeta would be my second choice of a sorority. They're semi-dress wearers, but there's not a blanket statement for the Zetas.
Kappa Delta, KD, is the sorority that I know the least about. I know some KDs, but I think a lot of them are older, so I don't know much about them. I do know that they seem to have a lot of charity dinners and concerts and the like which is cool. There are 3 girls on my hall who are KDs. I like them all and enjoy talking to them when I get to. If I had to choose a sorority that fit most with people's stereotypical view of Wofford, it would be KD. And that isn't anything against KD, I'm just calling it how I see it. They'd also be dresswearers during football season.
Delta Delta Delta, more affectionately known as Tri Delt. This is where my bias comes in. Were I to rush, to decide to be Greek, Tri Delt would be my goal. Some of my best friends here are Tri Delts and it's the sorority that I personally feel like I have the most in common with. Sometimes, I feel like you can look at a sorority and they kind of have the same look & I don't get that feeling with Tri Delt. They seem like the most amazingly fun and unique assortment of girls ever. Several of the theatre girls I know are Tri Delts and my diagonal neighbors to the right are, too. A few of the girls on the track team with me are, as well. The Tri Delts are a really chill group of girls and the most laidback sorority, in my opinion. They do really cool stuff and everyone I know adores her sister. There are 4 Tri Delts on my hall & I love them. Tri Delts don't seem to me to fit as easily into one group or the other. There are dresswearers and there are Dog Pack members. I don't really know how to put it into words.
Okay, now with all that being said, I (as a non-Greek) am going to attempt to do a cool thing for the benefit of those with questions about the sororities. I'm going to try to get the inside scoop from my hallmates, from some of the chapter presidents & see what they have to say to you about their sororities. I think that to hear their descriptions of their sororities is just as important as hearing mine, y'know?
Also, in all this Greeknees (ironically enough at the end of Greek Week), let's remember the non-Greeks. Here, it's just as okay to be non-Greek as it is to be Greek. The important thing to remember next year is to do what YOU want to do. Though, I encourage rush strongly and I plan on rushing this coming fall. It's a good way to meet lots of people here and to get a feel for which group of girls might most suit you or even if any of them will. All of the sororities are welcoming and love getting new sisters and from what I see they are all really close. I know the girls on my hall hang out with their sisters a lot. And A lot of roommates are also sorority sisters. Don't judge the girls before you meet them. A lot of people here that Wofford is a really big Greek school. About the half the student population is, maybe a little over. Sometimes people have negative ideas of the word Greek. I know it wasn't a super idea to me at the beginning of the year and I thought the whole thing was a little ridiculous. But, now that I have friends who are Greek and classmates who are Greek and teammates who are Greek, it really changes my perspective. There's not a "Greek type". It's like getting yourself a pre-made circle of friends who want to get to know you and want to hang out with you and who want to build unbreakable bonds with you. My suggestion is to be open to all of it and all of them. Though, I will do my best to make sure that you can come in with at least a little knowledge of things from both perspectives.
Hope that answers your question, Kathryn. If anyone wants to know anything else, definitely let me know. I know what a big deal not having a clue about some of this stuff is.
