Left Coast Envy

Well, today is Monday. Normally, that would suck, but today is different since it is officially spring break right now for the Terriers. Sweet!

As you might be wondering (but also might very well not be), I am in the ATL for spring break with my boy Tyler Whatley. I'm pretty stoked because I haven't gotten to see Tyler since he left Wofford. If you're curious as to what other people are doing/normally do for spring break...many go home and hang with the fam & friends, a lot of people go to Myrtle Beach and other places of equal sandiness/wateriness, and I guess others go to other places...

Since I don't like to break promises, I figured I would drop a few late Easter treats in the  "Blog Basket" for you. The following pictures are from the majestic Easter egg hunt held on the lawn in front of Old Main. I would say they are all quite "eggcellent"!!

Sooooo, the Easter egg hunt was pretty fun. Even though I didn't really find anything (the purple egg I got was actually just empty with a Laffy Taffy wrapper in it), there were some pretty killer snow cones being served. (I got strawberry cheesecake, which wasn't that good in reality but was interesting nonetheless.) AND, my picture was put in the paper!! Click HERE to check it out!!

And while I'm reflecting on past blogs, I remember telling you of my efforts to try and get The Starting Line to come and play at Wofford for Earth Day. Unfortunately, their price was about the same as Wofford's annual tuition, which was definitely not in our budget. Oh well, at least I got a sense of the reality of it. I think we'll just have to settle for some lame, mediocre cover band now, since The Working Title was also going to cost too much. Money, money, money... It really makes me mad that both bands cost so much too, especially The Starting Line, because I wanted to try and get something a little bit more different out to Wofford that the student body would still enjoy. It seems like the only bands that ever play at the Row and a majority of school events are cover bands. Most of these bands sound terrible and are awful when it comes to covering songs. Even if they are good, I can't stand to hear the same classic rock/southern rock songs being played weekend after weekend. I feel like kids today live in the past way too much and don't even bother to at least try and listen to the new music (and not just radio hits) that is being put out today. By no means is all of the music being put out today great - in fact, a lot of it is garbage...just like in every genre and every generation - but we should give it a chance and pay our respect where it is deserved. So many people in the world today seem so narrow-minded, and I wish that would change. But some places, like "the South" and all that it "stands for", might not ever change.

As for the rest of spring break, I'm not sure what's going down yet. So far, I've chilled on a boat and spent the night in it's luxurious wormhole with Tyler and friends; celebrated Taylor's birthday; and indulged in Mrs. Whatley's delicious French toast! I'll try and update you later in the week if I'm not too busy. Spring Break '08!!

The Game Needed Me

Well, as I promised, I have returned with Part II of yesterday's blog. If you didn't get to read yesterday's blog, scroll down now to it! Otherwise, the virus I programmed will most assuredly begin to attack and infest your computer. So, if you would like to avoid having killer, laser-shooting robot aliens come pouring out from your DVD/CD drive AND the space bar on your keyboard from growing teeth that will voraciously  devour your fingers...go read yesterday's blog first!

When I left you yesterday in the wake of Thursday's events, we had just finished defining and describing a convocation. After that, I had my 2:30 English class, which is always a cosmic time because we get to hear Dr. Lane talk about rivers (river narratives, that is). Later on early that night, I had (as I said before) my environmental meeting for Beta Beta Beta and attended the Troubadour Series concert after that. The highlight of the night, though, was definitely the concert we put on as somewhat of a final presentation for our Interim class (The Art & Craft of Songwriting). Since the class was taught by the Great Baker Maultsby himself, the official concert name was - unbeknownst to the general population - The Baker Maultsby Project: A Trip to Mars and Back. Mostly everyone from the class sang and/or performed (on guitar) their song. There was even a special appearance by the Bake himself. Since I am lacking in both the vox and crafty guitar fingers, I didn't perform the song I wrote (which I might say that I am at least decent at). I was able to catch all the action for your viewing pleasure.

So, I'm sure it's pretty clear that we really rocked out Thursday night. As for this weekend, the campus is completely dead because everybody went home for Easter (I figured I just couldn't make the 16-hour drive home back to Texas for some reason like I normally do on weekends). It's alright, though, that the school is quiet this weekend. I mean, it's not like Sigma Nu can win Greek Week every week...you know? I'll just take it easy, get my work done, and chill with the bros.

Oh yeah, I also have just a few pictures from last weekend. That was when Sigma Nu won Greek Week, last weekend.

Clearly, with outfits, game faces, and winning attitudes like that throughout the fraternity, it's no wonder Sigma Nu won Greek Week.

And now it is that time of the day where I go eat food. So I'm gonna go do that now. And why don't you go ahead and swing by tomorrow? I might just have a little something special in the old Internet Easter Basket for you...

This Is What I Know About Being Gigantic

Hello all you two-legged, opposable-thumbed creatures. Well, we have reached the end of yet another week, leaving us with only one week left in March but more importantly...ONE WEEK UNTIL SPRING BREAK!

I would have to classify this past week as rather busy, both academically and extracurricularly (the adverb of "extracurricular" that I created right now...epic).

In the academic department, I had my English midterm on Tuesday, and I think that was a pretty successful thing. I also had the usual old botany lab on Wednesday, and I would have to say that was pretty "sweet"! Get it? Huh? Huh? Because we got to eat fruit in lab!! But yes, sweet indeed. The lab focused on identifying flower parts and then identifying/characterizing fruits (aka ripened ovaries). Let's examine with the scientific eye:

P1010349
Legumes! (It's a legume because it looks like a legume.)

P1010350
Nuts! (Have a hard, woody pericarp and an involucre.)

In the extracurric department, I had the always wonderful Math Academy on Monday. Tuesday and Thursday, I had meetings for Beta Beta Beta (the biology honor society). It's getting pretty crucial right now, since we are going to have many an activity planned for Earth Day (April 24th). I am going to see if we can book The Starting Line to play for our concert at night, but that was seeming a little doubtful after some researching tonight. Yesterday was also the Troubadour Series that my Spanish teacher, Professor Akers does a grand job of putting on.

Of quite historical awesomeness and grandeur yesterday was the Convocation Honoring the "Builders of Old Main". Now, you may ask what a convocation is, as I was quite unsure yesterday. It is really quite simple though. In order to have a convocation, you need the following: 1 gallon of melted peanut butter, 2 pairs of "flotaties" (the popular public pool flotation device which slips around the arms and is utilized by youngsters across the globe), a Slip 'n Slide, and a nine iron. From there, you're now ready to have a convocation. However, the convocation yesterday was different from the typical one described above. Some would describe it as "monumental". Monumental indeed. All of the professors were  sporting their academic "regalia" as it is so named, and there was a grand procession into Old Main. From there, the choirs did some good bits of singing, Dr. Dunlap once again melted anxious audience with his wise words, and poet Nikky Finney performed quite a splendid reading of her poem titled "The Thinking Men", which was written specifically for the occasion. It was definitely a very notable event for Wofford College that I am glad to have experienced and been a part of.

Faculty and staff rockin the regalia!

Well, this one is getting pretty lengthy, so we shall resume with the second half of Thursday and onward tomorrow. Make sure you stick around for tomorrow's blog though, cuz I'm about to drop some of da hottest picz on da net!! I bid you farewell.

Are We Accidentally At A Party?!

ALRIGHT, SIGMA NU ARISES AS THE GLORIOUS VICTORS OF GREEK WEEK!!

More news to come. Probably, we are all guaranteed a position among the gods throwing lightning bolts or fireballs from the sky. Also, we probably don't have to go to classes for the rest of the semester and are given A's in all of our classes. I think...

SIGMA NU! SIGMA NU! SIGMA NU!

Hey Kid. I'm A Computer. Stop All The Downloading.

Gentle ladies and gentle men...I present to you...FRIDAY NIGHT! A night filled with wonder, a night of excitement and amazement, a night where the impossible becomes possible, a night where I don't actually have any homework to do!!

Yeah, I'm so glad this week is over. It was definitely the worst of this semester. Nothing was actually that bad about it, I just had three tests in addition to Greek Week going on. That is all said and done, though, and now I can relax at least for tonight and Saturday night. And best of all, I made a 93 on my Botany test! YEAH BRO!!

And as for the Greek Week thing, I really don't know much of what goes on. Tomorrow I believe is the Greek Games, and I know it entails certain events like the three legged-race, pie eating contest, and other challenges which require the strength of Zeuss, the fire and passion of Hades, and the backstabbing underhandedness of Hera. We're already off to a great start, though, as our master of the grill, Kyle, led Sigma Nu to a delicious, pork tenderloin-filled victory in the cookout! It was quite a delicious, greasy, well-seasoned first place.

I was also finally able to start doing the Math Academy again this past Monday, as I am completely past my mono =)

Well, I'm gonna head out now and go check out the "Mallard Ball" (a dance/concert thing for Greek Week). But before I do go, how lame is that? The theme for Greek Week is "Greeks Unlimited" (like that goofy brand "Ducks Unlimited"). Honestly, who likes ducks enough to dedicate an entire line of stupid, pastel-colored clothes to them? And then to take it one step further by dedicating an entire week to such unsurpassed lameness...outrageous. Anyways...I'm out.

The King Of Wishful Thinking

Hey guys. Well, it is the weekend once again, but unfortunately this one is not much of a break from the week. In some miraculous act by God, I have tests in THREE of my classes next week (all but one). So, I have been using the weekend to get my book on. It sucks that every weekend can't be fun and filled with a partying of sorts, but the biggest thing in college is managing your time and making sure you put certain priorities first....no matter how awful they may be.

On a brighter note, I ran some errands this weekend and thought it would be cool to use some of the few remaining gift cards I have from graduation/X-Mas. I like buying stuff. I like unwrapping new things and using them. It's thrilling. In fact, some of the stuff is so chewy, gooey good that I just have to tell you about it:

(1) New Found Glory's From The Screen To Your Stereo Part II. This CD is definitely the jam. I recommend it to any NFG fan or people who enjoy just some straight raw, face-grinding punk rock covers. Fave track: "The King of Wishful Thinking" (featuring Patrick Stump from Fall Out Boy; originally performed by Go West)

(2) SLC Punk. A real punk rock movie about being real punk and doin real punk rock things to bring down the institution. It's a pretty classic film from the late 90s and is really funny because it deals with a kid maintaining his punk identity and blue hair while figuring out whether he should actually attend Harvard for law school or not. ROCK ON BRO!

(3) My killer Brita water pitcher. Actually, the water is pretty dece here in Spartanburg and at Wofford, but it gets kinda nasty if you keep it in the fridge for any extended period of time. I'm looking forward to just being a real wet, watery dude with this! The best thing is, you get to change out the filter every two months. And in another two months, I get to do it again!!

So yeah, I guess that was all pretty exciting...at least I found it to be. Anyways, y'all keep it surreal, and I'll hit you up again soon.

The Secret Handshake

Hello bro men and bro women. My apologies for the lack of blogging lately. As you know, I had mono recently, and it got so bad last week that I faced death itself - beating it back with pills the size of my fist and an iron will to survive. I have really turned the corner now and feel about ninety times better.

So, now that I spent the past two or so weeks in bed, I have this huge pile of crap left called homework. While it sucks being sick, I was lucky enough to get sick early in the year, where I still have a chance to do well on my first round of exams. It's gonna take a lot of extra work and effort, but I think I can still pull it off at this point.

On a good note, my parents brought my car up this weekend! I got to eat real food again, and it was good getting to see them. I haven't had a car at school up until now, so it's great to finally be mobile. While I can say that it is possible to go to school without a car, it definitely makes life a lot easier with a one. Plus, you don't feel like a bum asking all of your friends for rides.

Other than that, I don't have too much for you guys. Like I said, I've been sick, so all I really have been doing the past two weeks is trying to get better. Now that I am pretty much better, hopefully I can start doing stuff again! Talk to you soon when I have some new updates.
